City of Birmingham Rockets are looking a dedicated Head Coach to fill the following Under-12 Mixed Head Coach vacancy on our Junior Performance Programme ahead of the 2022/23 season.
We are keen to hear from progressive and ambitious coaches who would like to be part of the Rockets organisation at what is an exciting time for the club.
The successful candidate will have a key role in player and team development within their designated age group. The role will be supported by a coach mentor and the club’s Technical Director; both of whom will support our coaches to ensure that club culture, playing principles and philosophies are consistent throughout the programme.
The role is expected to consist of between 6-10 hours per week, with small remuneration for the successful applicant.
Candidates should be able to work independently, be committed to continuous professional development and be committed to the Rockets organisation.
Good communication, reliability and integrity are key attributes desired for this role.

Role Description
City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club are one of the largest junior basketball clubs in the UK. Established in 2003, the club’s programmes reflect the rich diversity of the city of Birmingham and our extensive pathways enable appropriate personal and player development for young people of all ages and experiences.
The club’s Junior Performance Academy operate boys’ and girls’ youth teams at Under 14, 16 and 18 age groups that compete in Basketball England National League competitions at both Regional and Premier levels. We are now looking to appoint progressive and enthusiastic staff to fulfil Head Coach roles for the 2022/23 season to support in the implementation of a new strategic plan to elevate the Rockets playing programme.
This role is ideal for those coaches wishing to be part of a learning environment and happy to work towards a whole club philosophy and playing style. Opportunities for coach development exist with our overseas partners and through our delivery of holiday camps including the Hakeem Olajuwon Summer Camp held annually and delivered by the club.
Main Duties
- To take full responsibility for coaching sessions and games for the 2022/23 Season. Our Under 12 Group will have 2 team practice sessions per week in addition to between 16 and 22 game days.
- To input into player selection from annual trials day and additional recruitment events.
- To ensure that the club culture principles and on-court playing styles, as devised by the club’s Director of Coaching, are implemented, and followed effectively.
- To closely follow the club’s skill development technical recommendations for each age group.
- To support the club in implementing the club culture and standard of values, ethics and playing criteria within the team.
- To complete a season plan to share with the club’s Director of Coaching/ Technical Director, reviewed and evaluated monthly.
- To prepare all coaching sessions beforehand in line with season plan agreed with the Director of Coaching.
- To complete Individual Player Profiles as an ongoing concern, during the season to be presented to the Director of Coaching/ Technical Director upon request.
- To be committed to a Continuous Professional Development Programme to enhance coaching methods and benefit the players within the club.
- To support the development of assistant coaches and support staff.
- To provide feedback on the organisation and degree of success of coaching and competitions.
- To lead in the selection of teams.
- To travel to games with the team and coach each game with integrity, behaving as a positive role model for al club players.
- To be supportive of other club coaches and teams whilst working for the betterment of every individual within the club.
- To adhere to the club’s discipline and grievance procedures.
- To follow the club’s guidance on all protocols including coach, player, and parent expectations.
Personal Specification
- Candidates should hold a minimum of a Level 2 Basketball England Coaching qualification or be working towards it (and willing to work towards level 3).
- Candidates should be able to demonstrate experience within a player development and team environment.
- Candidates should be able to demonstrate an ability to create an effective learning environment to motivate and engage players, whilst effectively progressing on-court activities at an appropriate pace to challenge and educate.
- Candidates should be prepared to adhere to selected Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as set by the club.
- Candidates will be required to be available for and prioritise attendance at club events including annual trials, pre-season, and mid-season training camp.
- Candidates will be required to produce comprehensive season plans, individual session plans, evaluations, and game notes.
- Candidates will be required to be available for monthly coach meetings.
- Candidates will keep up-to-date player and team progress reports and assessments.
- Candidates should have a desire to learn, develop and be available to attend regular coach education/CPD as set by the club (Essential).
