Martyn Gayle Announced As Player Coach

Rockets are pleased to announce that Martyn Gayle will step into the role of player coach for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

Shooting Guard Gayle rejoined his boyhood club from Division 1 outfit Team Newcastle this season with the ambition of spearheading Rockets’ promotion push..

He will be assisted in his new role by Jordan Dawes and Dominic Short as Rockets look to build on an encouraging start to the NBL Division 2 season.

Dawes, currently in rehabilitation from ongoing calf injuries, is a returning Rocket from last season and will support Gayle alongside Short; who supported Coach Douglas on the sidelines during the 2021/22 campaign.

Rockets CEO, Robert Palmer, said, “We were all naturally disappointed that we were unable to obtain a suitable visa for Nuno so close to the start of the season, and at that point asked Martyn to lead the group into the season when the group needed continuity and leadership.

“Having explored a range of options and seen the positive impact the current set up has had on the first team, we are confident that Martyn, supported by Jordan and Dom gives us the best chance to push forward.

“The group have worked well together so far. The stability, diligence and leadership we have seen from the coaching team gives us every confidence that we can build on an excellent start to the league season and our goals remain unchanged.”

Elly Petch (Sports Therapist), Bilal Ladak (Club Doctor) and Steph Kontopyrgos (Sports Psychologist) round off our Men’s First Team’s backroom team for 2022/23.

We would like to wish our new look performance staff every success for the season ahead!
