Weekend Roundup 14th/15th January 2023

It was a successful weekend of action for Rockets with five wins from seven across the club.

The result of the weekend goes to our Under 18 Boys Premier side, who upset league leaders Surrey Rams to come away with a 71-68 home win.

Antwone Armstrong-Wheatle hit the decisive three with just seconds on the clock to see Rockets snatch a hard-fought win and showcase the potential of Coach D’Alva’s young side.

Saturday also saw our Under 14 Premier side pick up a 90-71 away win at Cheshire Phoenix as Coach Tavares’ team got back on track to further solidify their place in the playoff picture.

Our Men’s First Team then took to the court at Nechells for a 7:30pm tip against a Derbyshire Arrows side who have demonstrated an ability to hold their own against some of the top teams in the division this season.

Despite an even start, Rockets pulled away to record a comfortable 31-point win over our visitors; with a 92-61 win seeing the team notch a fourteenth consecutive league victory.

Earlier in the day, our Under 14 Boys Conference side just missed out on recording back-to-back wins, with Shrewsbury Storm edging out 46-41 winners despite a resilient Rockets display.

Coach Brunetti’s Under 16 Boys Conference side also slipped to a narrow defeat, with Bromsgrove Grizzlies also taking the win by a five-point margin, 69-64, in another tight game that could have gone either way.

Sunday saw a return to form for our Under 16 Boys Premier and Under 18 Women, with both sides picking up important road wins.

Coach Douglas’ U16s were up first in Leicester – they would go on to do the double over the Riders by way of a 92-83 win; having already defeated yesterday’s opponent at Nechells earlier in the season.

Not to be outdone, Coach Elfrey took his Under 18 Women’s side up to Manchester to once again face off against Mystics II – looking to record back-to-back wins in Manchester after defeating Mystics in mid-December.

A 60-52 win sees the team climb back up to second in the standings and move to a 5-2 record – with the team showcasing an ability to compete and take on some of the division’s strongest sides in their first season at this level after last season’s promotion.
