City of Birmingham Rockets’ Women’s First Team lost out to Stockport Lapwings on Saturday evening at Nechells Wellbeing Centre.
Stockport came out of the traps quickly, imposing themselves on the game after scoring first to quickly open up a double-digit advantage.
A Michelle Turner three reduced the deficit to ten after the Lapwings had opened up a commanding lead, but our visitors answered back immediately with a two; demonstrating a ruthless efficiency which plagued the Rockets throughout the first quarter.
Our visitors would go on to put up 28 points whilst holding our Rockets to just fourteen in an impressive first quarter showing.
Milly Harrison’s early two preluded a better second quarter showing from the Rockets, with the addition of Felicitie Umahoza providing a more dominant defensive presence.
Despite this, the Lapwings would open up a twenty-point half time lead, leaving Coach Mintoft’s side with it all to do in the second period.
Felicitie drained an early three as we looked to keep pace with Stockport’s continued high production, but our visitors extended their advantage, thanks in part to a run of free throws, as they put the game firmly out of reach.
Our visitors would hold us to just six final quarter points as they raced away to secure a comprehensive victory.
Team Birmingham Elite away from home are next up for our women, with Coach Mintoft’s side eager to put things right against our cross-city rivals.
