Match Preview: City of Birmingham Rockets vs Team Birmingham Elite

City of Birmingham Rockets Basketball Club’s Senior Men’s First Team will play host to cross-city rivals Team Birmingham Elite in our opening NBL Division Two this afternoon, tip-off 6pm.

The Opposition

Formed in 2004, this afternoon’s opponents were formed as the Aston Athletics and were promoted from Division Three at the first attempt. They would go on to suffer relegation in 2017 before being promoted the following season before another relegation in 2018.

Promotion followed in the next campaign as they bounced back to Division 2 at the first attempt; and they will be hoping this season marks their first full campaign back at this level following the shortened 2019/20 season and the cancelled 2020/21.

They would go on to record a 8-10 record in 2019/20, resulting in a sixth-place finish in the shortened Division 2 season.

Rockets Recent Form

The Rockets come into this afternoon’s game after a morale boosting 68-67 NBL Cup victory away at Worcester Wolves last Saturday.

Jordan Dawes’ late shot secured our place in the next round, setting up a tie against this afternoon’s opponents, Team Birmingham Elite, at Nechells Wellbeing Centre next Sunday, 10th October.

Tickets for that fixture are available here: https://www.cobrockets.co.uk/product/city-of-birmingham-rockets-vs-team-birmingham-elite-sunday-10th-october-2021-430pm/

Around The League

With Division 2 North Basketball getting underway for the season today, all but two teams are in action throughout the day.

Charnwood Riders host Nottingham Trent University Hoods, Doncaster Eagles play Derbyshire Arrows, Bristol Hurricanes will host Myerscough Basketball Academy whilst the University of Chester will make the short journey to Manchester Magic.

There is set to be one game on Sunday, as Bristol Academy Flyers host the Northamptonshire Titans at 1pm.

The Rockets will be looking to get off on the right foot this season and continue on from last weekend’s cup success against our cross-city rivals.
