Rockets Under 14 Premier team had a great season, with Coach Chogugudza and the players sad that the season was cut short due to COVID-19 with the team going along the right path in time for playoffs.

A stunning season with only 1 lost game during the whole season in the tough Premier North Division saw Rockets looking to claim top spot with league leaders Manchester Magic still to play and the boys were still showing signs of improvement game after game.

Coach Chogugudza said, “ It was a really enjoyable season. The players confidence was increasing as the season progressed and everyone bought into their roles which made it easier during competition. I enjoyed coaching such a hardworking committed group who sometimes had 4 games in week and they never failed to work hard.

The same players also competed in the Under 16 Midlands Conference league (winning several games) which helped the players with the physicality of the game. Having to mark taller and stronger opponents made the game easier for them when they played in their own age group. Even though the players struggled with rebounding and the speed of the older players, it will help them moving forward into the Under 16 age group as it will not be a new thing they haven’t faced before.

Playing up an age group helped with our finishing as the players had to be creative finishing over and around bigger players. Ball movement improved because it wasn’t easy for players to make straight line drives. From convincingly winning Under 14 games by 30 or 40+, playing up put the team in situations where the games were close or in situations where we were down and had to show perseverance.

The players were a really good group to coach and they are all ready for the next step of their journey into Under 16 basketball.”

Thank you to our team manager Sonia Armstrong- Wheatle for her support during the season. With the team playing in 2 competitions good organisation was important.

Behind the scenes Sonia worked tirelessly to organise fixtures and travel amongst other things for which we are all very grateful.”
