The COB Rockets Under 9’s were the clubs youngest squad and took their first steps in basketball with a broad smile on their faces.
Sessions led by head coach Mark Evans and youth co-ordination lead Ricardo D’Alva were designed to be fun whilst instilling the fundamentals of basketball. Footwork, passing, dribbling and shooting were worked on weekly with a focus on enjoyment and development.
The sqaud competed very well in the YBL Under 9s league. Progression was apparent from the first round of games to the last. The players competed with often bigger and older opposition with most of the squad being only 7 years of age. The highlight of the season had to be a last second jump shot winner against the then unbeaten Coventry Tornadaoes team.
Coach Mark Evans was very pleased with his team! “I was very proud to support the development of these young players, their passion and excitement for the game of basketball energised my Saturday mornings. Their development in terms of coordination, footwork and core skills was outstanding over the season. As a result performances in competitive games improved and with the same consistent effort these players have a very bright future”
Most of this squad will still be Under 9 next season and we look forward to their return. For those that will progress to the Under 11 program we are sure they will continue their remarkable progress.
The progression of these players was a real team effort with amazing support from the coaches Tyrone Kinch, Chris Gkoufas, Djoss Balela, Lai Ponjee, Zindzi, Oliver, Amina and strength and conditioning Divya Kaur
A massive thank you to Owen Lamprey who went over and above in his role as team manager. Organising games, travel and kits he also managed the players on game days and supported the team throughout the season.
